I have worked in the film and television sound post production industry for over 40 years.
After leaving school in 1979 I took a position as Trainee Tape Operator in a recording studio and magnetic film transfer bay in Soho where I transferred 1/4” tape music masters to 35mm, 16mm and 17.5mm mag, and prepared tape masters for disc cutting, making tape edits with a joining block and splicing tape.
After 5 years my co-worker (Nigel Heath) and I saw a gap in the market and my first business - Hackenbacker - was established. We rented rooms from Stanley and Peter Long at Salon and worked with an array of clients, including major feature films and film students - which was where I first started working with artist Tacita Dean; we still work together of her film projects, as well as promoting the irreplaceable benefits of celluloid.
By 1985/6 digital technology had moved into post production. We were one of the first facilities to invest in the AMS Audiofile, an 8 track play/record/edit system which synchronised to Lo-band U-matic video tape. We quickly expanded, first building a small mixing theatre with a recording area for voice-over and Foley recording, then taking the lease on a recording studio in Soho’s Chinatown.
The next expansion was into Shepperton Film Studios, where we teamed up with a freelance sound editor to create The Sound Design Company, with ten sound and picture editing rooms housing Pro Tools, AMS Audiofile, Avid, Audiovision and Akai DD1500.
By now I was Studio Managing; we were tracklaying numerous film and television projects and hiring out sound and picture editing equipment, employing a squad of full-time staff, freelance sound editors and foley artists, and working with Producers, Directors and re-record facilities from all around the world. We developed an exemplary reputation for quality of work and attitude and spent many years at the top of the tree.
Of course time, clients and equipment moves on; my staff became freelancers themselves and are well respected technicians, working on many award-winning film projects - of which I am extremely proud!
Since working at Shepperton I have worked as in-house sound editor at Synxspeed (part of the Deluxe group) and Head of Sound at Cinelab London.
I helped in the restoration of a major music label’s archive collection and edited effects, foley and dialogue on various feature film projects.
